Origin, Meaning, And History of Jasper

The name Jasper is a gender neutral name of Persian origin derived from the word “ganzabara” meaning ‘bringer of treasure.’ However, initially, it was used as a surname in the 12th century and derived from the French word “gaspard” meaning ‘treasure’ after which it was translated to the anglicized version, Jasper. In Greek, the name is derived from the word “iaspis” meaning ‘treasurer’ and also in Hebrew, derived from the word “yasaph” meaning ‘he will shine.’

Although there is no direct evidence, it is considered that the name Jasper is related to the gemstone, the etymology of which is Old French derived from the Semitic languages. The name of the gemstone in Persian is derived from the word “yashp” which is similar to the Hebrew name “yasaph” and hence, is attributed to this name. Jasper is the usual English form of the Latin name Gaspar, which dates back to the Biblical story of the Three Wise Men or Magi and Melchior and Balthazar, who visited the infant Jesus and brought gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. However, Jasper is believed to have bought gifts of gold as he is a “bringer of treasures.”

Jasper has been a popular name for centuries with a wide variety of variations like Caspar, Casper, Gaspar, Gasperina, Jaspar, Jespa, and Jesper and nicknames like Jack, Jas, Jasp, Jay, Jazz, Jazzy, and Jess.
